Novenas

Today is the feast day of St. Therese of Lisieux. I figured that I’d do a post on novenas to celebrate!

A novena is a public or private devotion prayed for nine successive days in hopeful anticipation of an answered prayer. The word ‘novena’ comes from the Latin word “novem”, which means nine, and the significance of the nine day vigil comes from the Bible. After the Ascension, Mary and the apostles kept a prayer vigil for nine days waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

Christians have prayed in this way throughout history, especially when they have a special intention to offer up. Novenas are great tools to grow in steadfastness and devotion to God. We can pray novenas at any time of the liturgical year but there are also recommended ones for each season and leading up to particular feast days.

A popular novena to St. Therese ended yesterday on the eve of her feast day. That doesn’t mean you can’t pray it at any time throughout the year though!

The first part of the novena is prayed each day and the second part is specific to the day. So easy! I also find it helpful to choose a particular time of day to pray the novena so that I don’t forget.

Dearest Saint Therese of Lisieux, you said that you would spend your time in heaven doing good on earth.
Your trust in God was complete. Pray that He may increase my trust in His goodness and mercy as I ask for the following petitions…
(State your intentions)
Pray for me that I, like you, may have great and innocent confidence in the loving promises of our God. Pray that I may live my life in union with God’s plan for me, and one day see the Face of God who you loved so deeply.
Saint Therese, you were faithful to God up until the moment of your death. Pray for me that I may be faithful to our loving God. May my life bring peace and love to the world through faithful endurance in love for God our Saviour.
